Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Countermeasures

SRI Biosciences is a major contributor to the development of medical countermeasures for chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) threats that may be used against military or civilian populations. Examples of our efforts related to homeland security and national defense include:

• CounterAct program through the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), for preclinical development of therapeutics against chemical warfare agents

• Division of Microbiology and Infectious Disease (DMID) of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID), for the development of therapeutics and vaccines against a wide variety of biodefense pathogens

• Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) contract for the development of animal models for evaluation of medical countermeasures for biological and radiological/nuclear agents

• NIAID contracts and grants for the development of an oral drug for chelation of radioisotopes

• Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) contract, "Accelerated Path to Safe and Effective Therapeutics (APSET) for Bioterrorism Agents",  for repurposing of Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved drugs against selected biothreats to identify therapeutics with appropriate safety profiles and broad spectrum activity

Relevant federal contracts and grants to SRI, ongoing and recent, that are related to CBRN countermeasures:
