Students / Faculty / Fellows

SRI is committed to helping enrich the science and technology community by shaping undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral students into researchers and other professional positions. To reach this goal, SRI offers curriculum-focused research and non-research-oriented positions for undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral students, high school students, and university faculty members.

From learning how to write grant proposals and client reports, to articulating ideas and conducting hands-on research, students and faculty members participate in a broad spectrum of activities. While at SRI, students have opportunities to present their work, attend seminars, and engage with their peers.  Students benefit from having an assigned advisor and from an environment that includes some of the R&D community's most innovative contributors.

SRI participates in student programs such as the NSF's Research Experience for Undergraduates Program (REU), and the National Youth Leadership Forum (NYLF), as well as Industry Initiatives for Science and Math Education (IISME) for teachers.

For clients and funding organizations such as the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), SRI helps ensure a robust pipeline of trained professional researchers and professors vital to our nation's R&D infrastructure.

Undergraduate and Graduate Students
Requirements: Current full-time student status at an accredited college institution; unrestricted authorization to work in the U.S. Positions are designed to supplement education and career direction. Job duties are tied to a specific project, and training is provided in parallel to the classroom curriculum.

SRI's Molecular Physics Laboratory participates in the Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program of the National Science Foundation. The program provides opportunities for outstanding undergraduates to participate in research at SRI and to benefit from the collegial atmosphere of collaboration and communication among all members of the laboratory.  Read more about the REU program at SRI

Postdoctoral Fellowships
Postdoctoral fellowship appointments are available to U.S. and non-U.S. citizens of high scientific and scholastic achievement who have received their doctoral degrees and desire to continue their research and training under the guidance of a particular senior SRI staff member. Postdoctoral appointments are usually for a one-year period and may be extended, by mutual agreement, in one-year increments for a second and on some occasions a third year (completion of the period is not obligatory for either party).

High School Students
Requirements: Current full-time student status; unrestricted authorization to work in the U.S.; must be at least 16 years of age, and at least 18 years of age for laboratory work.

Faculty Opportunities
Our partnerships with universities provide opportunities for faculty members on sabbaticals to come to SRI and participate in a faculty development plan. SRI also participates in the Industry Initiatives for Science and Math Education Program (IISME), an industry-education partnership focused on professional development opportunities for K-14 teachers.
