SRI Shenandoah Valley

In the News:

SRI Shenandoah Valley was established in Harrisonburg, Virginia in 2006 with support from the Commonwealth of Virginia and partnerships with James Madison University (JMU), Rockingham County, the City of Harrisonburg, the Virginia Economic Development Partnership, and the Shenandoah Valley Partnership in response to research and technology economic development. The project includes stakeholders in education, business and industry, economic development, the workforce system, community organizations, and local government.

The Shenandoah Valley of VirginiaSRI's presence in Harrisonburg offers collaboration with academic institutions in Virginia the institutions in the greater Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Our brand new "state-of-the-art" 40,000 square-foot research facility is located on a 25-acre campus in the Rockingham Center for Research and Technology.

SRI's Center for Advanced Drug Research (CADRE) has been established at SRI Shenandoah Valley. The work at CADRE is focused on improving the productivity of the pharmaceutical industry, helping our nation respond to biothreats, and developing life-saving treatments for neglected and orphan diseases. CADRE builds on SRI's existing pharmaceutical capabilities in Menlo Park, California.

The facility was also home to the Shenandoah Valley 21st Century Workforce Transitions Project, a 2007-2008 initiative among SRI and local business leaders to inventory the education and training systems in the region, and to assess the adequacy of these systems to meet long-term needs as the local job market changes and grows in response to research-based and high-technology economic development.

Over time, SRI Shenandoah Valley plans to add other high-technology programs in areas such as homeland security, engineering, nanotechnology, energy, and information technology. As SRI Shenandoah Valley conducts cutting-edge research on globally important problems, it is expected to serve as a magnet for student intern training, and for faculty to spend their sabbaticals actively engaged in R&D with real-world applications. SRI's collaborations with leading Virginia academic institutions are facilitated by government funding, sponsored industrial research, and private foundation support.
