SRI's context-based OCR techniques combine the characters recognized by an OCR engine into words that are part of an intelligible address (Figure 1). These techniques take advantage of the inter-word contextual constraints inherent in an address. Such an approach, which is more powerful than conventional recognition approaches, has been implemented in the USPS Recognition Coprocessor (RCP) and used in other SRI OCR and document understanding projects.
