FDA Approves Treatment for Peripheral T-cell Lymphoma
A cancer drug developed from a class of compounds first researched at SRI in the 1950s has been approved for the treatment of relapsed or refractory peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL), an aggressive blood cancer that has a worse prognosis than most other types of lymphoma. Pralatrexate — to be marketed by Allos Therapeutics as FOLOTYN™— has shown efficacy with less toxicity than other therapeutics because of its selectivity against cancer cells.  |
Celebrating the ARPANET's 40th Anniversary
On October 29, 1969, two computers 400 miles apart connected to launch the ARPANET — the world's first successful packet-switched wide-area computer network, which laid critical groundwork for the Internet. The first documented connection was sent to SRI from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). IEEE recently recognized SRI for its seminal role in this computing milestone with the commemorative plaque pictured at left. |
Brand New State-of-the-Art Research Center Opens in Shenandoah Valley
SRI just opened a brand new state-of-the-art 40,000 square-foot research facility in Shenandoah Valley: it hosts SRI’s Center for Advanced Drug Research (CADRE), which focuses on proteomics and whose goal is to create new diagnostics, therapeutics, and vaccines. |
Videos and Games in Preschool Can Improve Learning, Study Says
Low-income children’s literacy skills increase when classroom teaching is aided by videos and interactive games, according to a new study conducted by Education Development Center, Inc. and SRI for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) . The study took place in 80 preschool classes in New York City and San Francisco, using a special curriculum that included active video viewing and hands-on play. |

Brain Imaging Agents Evaluated for Treatment of Mental Illness
Brain imaging is key in the study of mental illnesses. Molecules called “ligands” can be used to perform different types of brain imaging, offering novel ways of developing promising treatments. Preclinical studies are needed, however, to understand whether a compound based on these ligands can be safely administered to people. SRI is conducting preclinical studies that may lead to more effective treatments. |
New Hope on the Horizon for Patients with Advanced Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men, and there is currently no cure for advanced stages. SRI researchers funded by the U.S. Department of Defense Prostate Cancer Research Program are working to develop an effective and well-tolerated therapy that improves prospects for a cure without impairing overall well-being.

California High School Students to Gain Insights into Future Jobs, Education
The James Irvine Foundation has awarded SRI a $2 million grant to evaluate the California Multiple Pathways District Initiative, which has a goal to prepare high school students for postsecondary education and for future jobs by offering them "real-world" scenarios.

SYSTRAN Licenses Language Translation Technology from SRI
SYSTRAN, a leading provider of language translation technologies, has licensed and fully integrated SRI’s Language Modeling (SRILM) toolkit into the SYSTRAN Enterprise Server 7 product line. SRILM is used for building and applying statistical language models for applications such as speech recognition, statistical tagging and segmentation, and machine translation. |
Nine Teams Collaborate in Biomedical Robotics Demonstration
Using a new Interoperable Telesurgical Protocol, nine research teams recently collaborated on the first successful demonstration of multiple biomedical robots operated together from different locations in the U.S., Europe, and Asia. SRI operated its M7 surgical robot (pictured at left ) for the demonstration. |
Understanding the Role of Genetics in Nicotine Dependence
New research on nicotine dependence, which could lead to more effective smoking cessation programs, is featured in the National Cancer Institute’s Tobacco Control Monograph series. Gary Swan, Ph.D., director of SRI’s Center for Health Sciences, was the series' senior scientific editor. |
SRI Debuts the Aware™ Mobile Network and Integrated Video Environment
In September, SRI’s Direct Technology group introduced its Aware™ Mobile Network and Integrated Video Environment (IVE) products at ASIS 2009 in Anaheim, California. Aware™ is a standards-based command and control software application designed specifically for public safety needs. Math Education Pilot Project Launched in Florida
Good math skills are a must-have for a solid, rewarding career. Unfortunately, many students disengage from math just when it becomes most crucial to their academic development. In an effort to design more compelling math curricula, SRI has launched the SunBay Digital Mathematics pilot project, which will set the direction for middle school math education in Pinellas County, Florida.

New Name for SRI Consulting Business Intelligence: Strategic Business Insights
SRI Consulting Business Intelligence, an employee-owned SRI spin-off company, has a new name. Strategic Business Insights (SBI) will continue to combine ongoing research with consulting services to create insights that affect customers, business, and technology.
SBI has worked with government and business clients on opportunities and change since 1958. The company spun off from SRI in 2000. The organization is headquartered in Menlo Park, CA with additional offices in Japan, the United Kingdom, and New Jersey.

Sleep Patterns of Alcoholics Affected Long After Sobriety

As described in the journal Sleep, long-term alcoholism affects sleep even after extensive periods of abstinence. Ian Colrain, Ph.D., principal investigator of the study and director of SRI's Human Sleep Research Program, was surprised to find that a significant increase in the percentage of REM sleep persisted in alcoholics who had abstained from drinking for an extended period.
