HEALTH AND MEDICINE
SRI Allies with Plexus and Delphi Medical Systems to Bring Medical
Products to Market
SRI has recently allied with two major medical product manufacturers to
help bring new devices to the marketplace:
* Plexus Corporation (NASDAQ: PLXS) has allied with SRI to help
medical technology companies bring new life-saving product solutions to
market. The alliance provides a new model for companies (from emerging
start-ups to Fortune 500 corporations) that seek contract engineering
and manufacturing to help bring their technology concepts to commercialization.
Together, SRI and Plexus give customers access to everything from basic
research to product design and volume manufacturing, all from one integrated
team. More information
* Delphi Medical Systems Corp., a subsidiary of Delphi Corp. (NYSE:
DPH), has signed a research and development agreement with SRI to develop
several new respiratory care technologies. Delphi Medical Systems anticipates
marketing the respiratory care technologies within 12 months. The agreement
gives SRI an opportunity to lend its interdisciplinary R&D expertise
to products that will have a positive impact on human health. More

National Cancer Institute Asks SRI to Qualify Cancer Drug Candidates for
Clinical Studies
Under two contracts totaling approximately $12.3 million over seven years,
the National Cancer Institute (NCI)
has selected SRI to evaluate the preclinical safety and pharmacology of
potential therapeutic cancer treatments and chemopreventive agents. NCI
will use SRI's preclinical studies to support Investigational New Drug
(IND) applications to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for
clinical studies. SRI has provided the NCI with services for 50 years.

ROBOTICS
Shakey Selected for Robot Hall of Fame
Carnegie Mellon University has selected SRI's pioneering “Shakey”
robot for induction into their Robot
Hall of Fame. Shakey and four other celebrated robots will be honored
in a ceremony on October 11 at the Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh.
Shakey, which put SRI's Artificial Intelligence Center on the map in the
1960s, was the first autonomous mobile robot capable of sensing its environment
and navigating its own course. More
information
SRI's Artificial Intelligence Center
has been a center of innovation for more than 35 years. Check out the
AIC timeline for some of
the Center's major achievements and milestones.
EDUCATION
First Study Results Announced on U.S.' Largest One-to-One Computing
Initiative
An overwhelming majority of teachers and students in grades 6-12 in the
Henrico County, Virginia public school district reported positive impacts
of using laptop computers, according to a study by SRI's Center
for Education Policy and the Education
Development Center, Inc. With 25,000 laptops provided to students
and teachers, the Henrico County program is the largest ubiquitous, or
"one-to-one" computing initiative in any U.S. school district.
The study is funded by the National Science
Foundation. Read
more about the study results and visit http://ubiqcomputing.org/.
SRI SPIN-OFF NEWS
PacketHop Secures $10 Million, Signs Co-Marketing Agreement
PacketHop, Inc.
has secured $10 million in a Series B financing round led by the venture
capital firm ComVentures. The funding will fuel company growth for commercial
launching of secure mobile mesh networking products. PacketHop has also
signed a partnership agreement with Nortel networks to co-market mobile
communications solutions, initially for rapid deployment of secure networks
to be used by public safety and law enforcement agencies. Also, Norman
Winarsky, SRI's Vice President of Ventures and Strategic Programs,

Is an SRI Innovation in a Museum Near You?
* Over the decades, many of SRI's innovations have had significant historical,
scientific, and societal value. Recognizing this, museums around the U.S.
approach SRI to request acquisition or loan of artifacts. Replicas of
the first computer
mouse, which was invented at SRI, have been donated or are on loan
to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington,
D.C., the Boston Museum of Science, and
The Tech Museum in San Jose, California.
The Computer History Museum
in Mountain View, California, has acquired the first
all-magnetic logic computer, created in 1959 by SRI's Hew Crane. SRI's
Shakey, the
world's first mobile robot able to reason about its surroundings, resides
at the Computer History Museum, as does the van from which SRI made the
first mobile wireless demonstration of the Internet protocol TCP in 1977.
