Innovation highlight of Summer 2008: SRI Robots!

Wall-climbing Robots Aim High

Wall-climbing robot

In natural disasters, military actions, and public safety threats, the ability for a robot to scale walls and other vertical building surfaces offers unique capabilities. SRI's novel clamping technology, called compliant electroadhesion, has enabled wall-climbing robots that may help in such situations. SRI has demonstrated robust performance of these robots in climbing walls made of several common materials.

Enhancement for Combat Readiness Training Systems Unveiled

DFIRST

SRI has developed a Common Training Instrumentation Architecture (CTIA)-compliant gateway for SRI’s Deployable Force-on-Force Instrumented Range System (DFIRST™). DFIRST, used by the Army National Guard in combat readiness training exercises, provides vehicle positioning, engagement simulations, data collection, and archiving for after-action reviews. The gateway, a first among live training systems in use by U.S. Armed Forces, allows Guard training systems to integrate with companion systems built for the U.S. Army.

NASA NEEMO 12 Mission Journal, June: SRI’s M-7 Used in NASA’s NEEMO 12 Telesurgery Simulation
NEEMO 12 is part of a NASA mission to test lunar exploration concepts and a suite of long-duration spaceflight medical objectives in extreme ocean environments, which mimic the conditions of outer space. NEEMO 12 provides a unique platform to test telerobotic systems under challenging conditions. SRI’s M-7 surgical robots are used in the simulations. In NEEMO 9 (2006), SRI successfully demonstrated the first extreme environment telerobotic surgery.

AutomationWorld, June: SRI Teams Up on a Cyber Security Control System for the Energy Industry
Progress updates have been released on a 10-year roadmap aimed at achieving cyber security for control systems in the energy sector. SRI is among those participating in the Department of Energy’s Detection and Analysis of Threats to the Energy Sector (DATES) project.

CNET, May: Sticky Robot Scales Walls
The U.S. and international press can’t stop writing about SRI’s wall-climbing, electroadhesion-based robots!
