Steven Samuelsson, Ph.D.
Imaging Scientist, Biosciences Division
Expertise: Molecular Morphology, Imaging, Preclinical Pharmacology/Assay Development
Steven Samuelsson, Ph.D., oversees SRI International's molecular microscopy facility, which provides imaging modalities for preclinical studies. This includes conducting independent, collaborative and adjunct research and services in areas such as immunohistochemistry, cytochemistry, histology, light and laser microscopy, ultrastructure and morphology, single-particle analysis, and membrane biology.
Samuelsson has vast experience in microscopy-based experimental design. His past work experience includes heading the microscopy and non-invasive imaging function at (OSI) Eyetech Pharmaceuticals, where he helped bring the first aptamer-type therapy (Macugen) to the market. Prior to OSI/ET, Dr. Samuelsson was head of the Cell and Molecular Imaging group at Procter & Gamble Pharmaceuticals. During his eight-year tenure at P&G, Samuelsson served as a member of the bone, muscle and vascular biology teams, and participated in critical projects (through stage III) in discovery research, neurobiology, muscle atrophy and angiogenesis.
Samuelsson received his B.S. in nutritional sciences (biochemistry) from the University of California, Berkeley, and his Ph.D. in physiology from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He also completed postdoctoral work in biophysics at The Johns Hopkins University and was a staff fellow in the Heart, Lung and Blood Institute at the National Institutes of Health.
