SRI International Elects Philip Quigley, Former Ceo of Pacific Telesis, and Mariann Byerwalter, CFO of Stanford University, to SRI's Board of Directors

Menlo Park, Calif. (December 7, 1998) -- MENLO PARK, Calif., December 7, 1998 - SRI International, one of the world's largest independent technology innovators, today announced the election of Philip Quigley, former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Pacific Telesis, and Mariann Byerwalter, Chief Financial Officer of Stanford University, to SRI's Board of Directors. Curtis R. Carlson, who became SRI International's President and Chief Executive Officer on December 1, was also elected to the Board.

"Phil Quigley and Mariann Byerwalter will be tremendous assets to SRI, strengthening the Board of Directors as SRI implements its new strategies of bringing world-leading technologies to the marketplace through new enterprises, licensing arrangements and corporate technology partnerships. Phil's thirty years of experience in the telecommunications industry will enhance SRI's information technology and telecommunications business. Mariann brings to SRI fourteen years of financial market experience, including several years leading the financial and administrative functions of one of the world's most prestigious universities," said Samuel H. Armacost, Chairman of SRI International.

"Curt Carlson, who has served government and commercial clients for more than twenty years and has created new ventures and licensing opportunities, will also further SRI's successful push into commercial markets. Philip J. Quigley was elected Chairman and CEO of Pacific Telesis in 1994. Following the merger with SBC Communications in 1997, he served as Vice Chairman. He has also served as President and CEO of Pacific Bell, COO of PacTel Corporation, and CEO of PacTel Cellular. Since his retirement in December 1997, Mr. Quigley has pursued his venture capital advisory and investment interests. He is a director of Wells Fargo Bank, Vina Technologies, Protocal Communications and SNAP Technologies, as well as Chairman of the California Business Roundtable. He has a B.S. from California State University in Los Angeles.

Mariann Byerwalter has been CFO and Vice President for Business Affairs at Stanford University since 1996. Her broad business, finance and administrative responsibilities include government cost and rate studies, business development, and information technology systems and services. Previously, she was CFO at Eurekabank, a partner and co-founder of America First Financial Corporation, and Vice President of Strategic Planning and Corporate Development at Bank America Corporation. Ms. Byerwalter currently serves on the Boards of Stanford Health Services, Stanford Management Company, America First Companies, Metra Biosystems and Redwood Trust, Inc. She received the 1998 Financial Woman of the Year Award from the Financial Women's Association of San Francisco. She has a B.S. from Stanford University and an M.B.A. from the Harvard Business School.

Prior to joining SRI International, Curtis R. Carlson was Executive Vice President of Sarnoff Corporation, one of SRI's two wholly owned subsidiaries. In his role as head of Ventures and Licensing at Sarnoff, Dr. Carlson helped found more than ten new companies. He helped establish and became Executive Director of the National Information Display Laboratory, a new collaborative model for research, development and commercialization between the government and commercial industry. He has also served on the Air Force Scientific Advisory Board, the Army Research Laboratory Technical Assessment Board, and is a charter member of the Highlands Group, which makes technology recommendations to senior officials in the U.S. government. Dr. Carlson has a Ph.D. from Rutgers University.

Philip Quigley and Mariann Byerwalter replace George M. Keller, retired Chairman and CEO of Chevron Corporation, and Myron Du Bain, retired Chairman and CEO of Fireman's Fund Corporation, who are retiring from SRI's Board. Curt Carlson replaces William P. Sommers, who retired as SRI's President and CEO.

In addition to Philip J. Quigley, Mariann Byerwalter, Curtis R. Carlson and Samuel H. Armacost, SRI's ten-member Board includes James Carnes, CEO of Sarnoff Corporation; Paul Cook, President and CEO of DIVA Systems Corporation; James T. Curry, former CEO of BHP Utah Minerals; James F. Gibbons, Special Counsel to the President & Provost for Industry Relations at Stanford University; Charles A. Lynch, Chairman of Fresh Choice, Inc.; and William J. Spencer, Chairman of SEMATECH.
