Human Sleep Research Program

Center for Health Sciences' Neuroscience Program logoTo understand more about the human brain, the Human Sleep Research Program in SRI's Center for Health Sciences studies sleep and conducts tests of the nervous system during sleep. Our research is sponsored by clients including the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and several NIH institutes, including the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.

Our comprehensive research on brain structure and function uses a combination of cognitive tests, electroencephalography (EEG) measures, and innovative magnetic resonance (MR) imaging technology. The Program's investigators, research scientists, postdoctoral scholars and research analysts have multifaceted backgrounds in neuropsychiatry, clinical psychology, MR physics, physiology, and computer science.

We also offer the ability to run FDA 510K trials. Contact us for more information.

Current Projects - Volunteers Needed!

Visit our Current Projects page for information on what we're current studying and how you may be eligible to volunteer to participate in one of our research studies.

Areas of Focus

  • Investigation of fundamental EEG processes during sleep
  • Impact of alcoholism and normal aging on sleep and brain structure
  • Relationships between smoking cessation, sleep disturbance, and failure to quit
  • Impact of hormonal changes on sleep in women
  • Role of genetics in determining sleep EEG patterns
  • Impact of upper airway mechanics on EEG during wakefulness and sleep
  • Impact of mild sleep deprivation on performance
