The Neurodegenerative Diseases Program in SRI International's Center for Health Sciences is focused on studies to understand the etiology of various neurodegenerative disorders including Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s Disease, Gaucher Disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, and others.
To achieve this goal, we use a wide variety of different techniques from diverse disciplines, including molecular, neuroanatomical, electrophysiological, and behavioral approaches.
Our studies are funded by several granting agencies including the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), the California Tobacco-Related Disease Research Program, the Michael J. Fox Foundation, Backus Foundation, the Alzheimer’s Association, and also commercial clients.
The results from our work will help identify mechanisms that are responsible for neurodegeneration. This in turn will allow us to identify therapies for their symptomatic treatment and prevention. This will ultimately improve the quality of life of patients with these and other neurological disorders, and result in dramatic cuts in ever escalating health care expenses.
