Ceramic Synthesis and Processing

SRI conducts research to identify and develop innovative ceramic processing approaches based on in-depth chemistry know-how. The R&D encompasses:

• Powder synthesis via chemical precursors and wet techniques including powders for structural ceramics and phosphors

• Synthesis of a broad range of preceramic polymers and polymer-derived ceramic (PDC) applications via polymer design, synthesis, modification, curing chemistry, and pyrolysis expertise

• A broad range of high-temperature and ultra-high-temperature ceramic (UHTC) coatings

• Thin and thick reinforcing of functional coatings

• Novel ceramic, ceramic/graphene, and ceramic/metal nanocomposites

• Low-cost fiber-reinforced ceramic matrix composites (CMC), metal-ceramic, polymer-ceramic, and inorganic-organic hybrid matrix composites

• Joining of ceramics

• Porous and nanoporous ceramic structures and beads

• Improved glass and glass-ceramic characteristics

SRI has also developed new concepts related to carbide, nitride, boride, oxide and phosphate ceramics containing the elements Si, Al, Ti, Zr, Hf, B, W, Mo, Ta, Mg, doped lanthanides and their combinations. Target applications are both structural and functional. SRI team members have published numerous papers on ceramics research and have collaborated widely in the ceramics area, with a focus on polymeric precursor processing.
